On 30 November 2025, the Faculty of Agriculture at Ubon Ratchathani University organized the second phase of the “Mue Riew Ro Kiao Ruang” Project (Harvesting Phase) at the faculty’s rice field. The activity aims to preserve the traditional cultural practice of collective rice harvesting (long khaek kiao khao), while providing hands-on learning about agricultural processes and donating harvested rice to support flood-affected communities in southern Thailand during the recovery period.
Dr. Narintorn Boonbrahm, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, presided over the opening ceremony, and Miss Jitladda Popila, a third-year student in the Agronomy program and the project leader, delivered the project report. Prior to the event, participants observed a moment of silence in remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. More than 300 faculty members, staff, students, and network partners took part in the activity.
Dr. Narintorn stated that the “Mue Riew Ro Kiao Ruang” Project has been organized annually to cultivate students’ understanding of the value of agriculture and to provide experiential learning on every step of rice cultivation—from planting to harvesting. The project consists of two phases: Phase 1 covers soil preparation, seedling preparation, transplanting, and crop management, while Phase 2 focuses on harvesting and post-harvest activities.
The rice was cultivated on four raiusing the Jasmine 105 variety (Hom Mali 105). The harvested yield will support student activities, volunteer outreach camps, celebration events for graduating students participating in the commencement ceremony for the 2024 academic year, and welcoming activities for new students in 2026. Part of the yield will also be donated to assist southern communities affected by recent flooding.
Furthermore, the project contributes to preserving the traditional communal rice-harvesting culture, reflecting values of generosity, cooperation, and unity. It reinforces the university’s commitment to sustainable development, particularly SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and aligns with UBU’s student identity: “Creative, Harmonious, and Socially Responsible.”
