Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU) congratulates the research team behind the project titled “Catfish (C. macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) with Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids” for receiving the Bronze Award at the Thailand Research Expo 2024. Associate Professor Dr. Thanatip Laemkhom, the project leader, represented the team in accepting the award and a prize of 50,000 baht at the Centara Grand at Central World Hotel in Bangkok on August 30, 2024. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Permsuk Sutchaphiwat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation.
The project focused on developing catfish feed formulas through extensive research on fatty acyl desaturase and fatty acyl elongase enzymes in catfish, integrating these findings with innovative and sustainable fish farming methods, such as the bio farm-style clay pond system and the bio floc system.
These combined approaches significantly enhanced the nutritional profile of the catfish, resulting in higher protein content, reduced fat levels, and lower total energy values. These improvements render the products not only functional but also safe, meeting the demands of health-conscious consumers. As a result, the project has facilitated the creation of a variety of catfish-based products, including Frozen Whole Fish, Frozen Fish Steaks, Frozen Fish Fillets, Catfish Floss, and Catfish Sheets.
This achievement underscores UBU’s dedication to advancing industry innovation and delivering high-quality consumer products.
