From August 26-30, 2024, Associate Professor Dr. Thanatip Laemkom, the project leader of “Catfish (C. macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) with Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids” at Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU), showcased groundbreaking research at the Thailand Research Expo 2024. Held at the Centara Grand at Central World Hotel in Bangkok, the event also saw support from Associate Professor Dr. Chutinun Prasitpuriprecha, UBU President. During the expo, UBU introduced three innovative feed formulas for catfish, each designed for specific growth stages:
These formulas were developed through extensive research on fatty acyl desaturase and fatty acyl elongase in catfish.
Additionally, UBU unveiled a pioneering sustainable fish farming system, emphasizing optimal density management, water quality, and waste decomposition using microorganisms. This system includes:
Combining these innovative farming systems with the new feed formulas significantly improved the nutritional value of the catfish, resulting in higher protein levels, reduced fat, and lower total energy content. These enhancements make the products functional and safe, catering to health-conscious consumers.
The project has led to the development of various catfish products, including Frozen Whole Fish, Frozen Fish Steak, Frozen Fish Fillet, Flossy Catfish, and Catfish Sheets.
This achievement highlights UBU's commitment to advancing the industry and providing exceptional consumer products.
