On July 21, 2024, Associate Professor Dr. Chutinun Prasitpuriprecha, President of Ubon Ratchathani University, along with Assistant Professor Dr. Griengsak Kaewkulchai, Vice President for Administration, and Assistant Professor Dr. Piyanat Soikham, Assistant to the President for Organizational Communication and Social Engagement, led the executive board, staff, and students in a procession at Thung Sri Mueang, Ubon Ratchathani Province. This tradition, which has been upheld for 123 years, was organized with the theme, Celebrating the 72nd Birthday of His Majesty, the City of Candles, the City of Righteousness, and the City of Four Lights.

The traditional candle procession, organized by Ubon Ratchathani University, included various elements such as:

  • The Candle Castle (phasattian): A square hall with a pyramidal roof, known as "Mondop" in the Lanchang style, crafted using the weaving technique of bamboo with flower patterns. It incorporated local craftsmanship of paper stabbing and punching, resembling a local village technician’s model.
  • The Candle: The large candle served as the core, with smaller candles tied together to create intricate patterns. These were decorated with the art of stamping paper, reminiscent of rocket decoration styles.
  • The Wax Castle (phasat phueng): Dedicated to merit-making for ancestors.
  • The Cloth Castle (phasat pha aam nam fon): Comprising cloth for bathing and other necessary items offered to monks during Buddhist Lent.
  • The Toong: Used to decorate the procession. Thetoong dok ta laew was designed to be more modern than the traditional versions.

Additionally, the procession highlighted the multiculturalism within the Ubon Ratchathani old city area, reflecting one of Ubon Ratchathani University's research projects. This segment showcased the unique characteristics of the old city, demonstrating the diversity of various cultural groups through their food, traditional festivals, and dress. Cultural groups included in the procession were Thai-Chinese, Isaan-Thai, Thai-Vietnamese, Thai-Christian, and Thai-Indian. Ubon Ratchathani University was dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Ubon Ratchathani Province. This commitment corresponds to our mission to be The community's university, a local mainstay, and the wisdom of the land.
