UBU won 2nd place for Thailand and ranked 441st in the world as a university for innovation. In April 2021, SCImago Institutions Rankings set forth criteria for outstanding universities for research, innovation, and social engagement in 2020. This international ranking was cited in a number of published journals in the SCOPUS database of peer-reviewed journals in top-level subject fields.
SCImago Institutions Rankings maintain the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, delivering a comprehensive overview of the world's research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities. The consideration involved:

Research - considered by means of academic documents such as journals, research, number of citations, and the number of researchers appearing in SCOPUS database.

Innovation - by way of modernization, patent rights, and published works in the science field from the PATSTAT (Patent Statistical Database).

Social engagement - considered from websites, data accessibility, and the amount of information appearing in public media.
Assistant Professor Dr. Chutinun Prasitpuriprecha, UBU President noted that in 2021, UBU’s ranking improved from the prior year from 7th place in Thailand and 751st in the world. This ranking marks a proud moment for Ubon Ratchathani Province in the three decades since the establishment of UBU. The university has continually proceeded according to the UBU mission statement to be “A Public University for the People” and conforms to the UBU vision “To be a leading university in ASEAN, fostering a higher quality of life, development, and innovation”.
