The Faculty of Law at UBU Celebrated Its 15th Anniversary

On 31 May 2019, the Faculty of Law at UBU organized an international academic conference to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Faculty of Law titled “Roles of Lawyers in Providing Legal Aid: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.” The event was officially opened by Assistant Professor Dr. Chutinun Prasitpuriprecha, the President of UBU and was held at U-Place hotel at Ubon Ratachthani University.

Mr. Khanpet Chaithaweep, Dean of the Faculty of Law at UBU, reported that the event aimed to maintain legal aid activities, which is one of the faculty’s mission. Additionally, it was aimed to increase lecturers’ and legal staff’s knowledge and skills to provide more legal aid, especially in Thailand, Laos PDR, Vietnam and Cambodia Moreover, the event was aimed to promote the English skills of the people in ASEAN countries and to drive the faculty to be one of the leading schools of law in the Mekong sub-region, which is another mission of the faculty.

The keynote speakers of the seminar were:

  1. Mr.Arnunsin Yatra                   Head of Law of the Faculty of Law and Political Science of Champasak University, Lao PDR
  2. Dr.Seng Ratha                        Dean of the Faculty of Sociology and Community Development, University of Battambang, Cambodia
  3. Dr .Nga Le                              Dean of Hue University of Law, Vietnam
  4. Mr Khanpet Chaithaweep       Dean of the Faculty of Law, Ubon Ratchathani    University, Thailand

The seminar was carried out in Thai, English, Lao, Vietnamese and Khmer. The moderator of this seminar was Mr. Rakkit Rattachumpoth, a lecturer from the Faculty of LawUBU, while Associate Professor Dr. Chanchai Khongphiantham, a lecturer from the Faculty of Liberal Arts, served as a Khmer-Thai translator.

For the afternoon session, the keynote speakers, who were representatives from each university, had a meeting to consult the possibility of organizing further collaborative academic activities. For this occasion, Assistant Professor Dr. Chalermchai Wongrak, Assistant to the President for International Relations and Education, and Ms. Patcharin Jongjai, Head of International Relations Office, also participated in the meeting.

The Faculty of Law has always played an important role in organizing collaborative academic activities with universities in ASEAN. These activities not only promote academic knowledge but it also creates understanding among the people in ASEAN countries. Having a strong relationship and understanding of one another is a key factor in strengthening the sustainable development of the countries in ASEAN.
