The event was held to honor the great King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V).  The event involved a garland-laying ceremony (pink in color) and showing respect by saluting the statue of King Rama V. Mr. Sarit Witoon, the Governor of Ubon Ratchathani Province, presided over the ceremony at the King Rama V Statue, Lan Kwan Meuang, Nai Mueang sub-district, Mueang district, Ubon Ratchathani.

October 23rd of every year is celebrated as a memorial day for King Chulalongkorn. Since he was loved and revered by both Thai and foreigners, he was posthumously named Somdetch Phra Piya Maharaj meaning “Beloved Great King”.

To demonstrate its gratitude to the Great King, the government announced that October 23rd is Piyamaharaj Day and organized this garland-laying ceremony at the statue of King Rama V.
